One aspect often overlooked when it comes to LED lighting is the emitter style. This flood lights feature surface mount (SMD) LEDs. Other lights utilize traditional or Dip style LEDs which have a epoxy bulb to focus the light from the diode. Surface mount LEDs however do not have a epoxy bulb and use the reflector in the bowl of the lamp to focus the light that is given off. Also SMD LEDs can have multiple emitters in a single chip, whereas Dip style LEDs are traditionally arranged in arrays. This is where the efficiency of the SMD LEDs comes into hand. SMD LEDs produce less heat, the light will degrade slower over the lifetime of the bulb, and the lifespan of a SMD LED is much greater than a Dip LED.
